Food in Hindi
In this free lesson we’re going to introduce you to a collection of vocabulary related to different kinds of food and drinks.
It’s important to know some basic vocabulary for food when traveling in Hindi. You’ll find it handy when going out to eat or when shopping for food in a market.
You'll be a master of food in Hindi after this lesson!
Pronouncing food in Hindi
दोपहर का खाना
dopahara kā khānā
रात का खाना
rāta kā khānā
Here are some more words related to food:
कॉफी शॉप / कॉफी की दूकान
kāphī śāpa / kāphī kī dūkāna
Here I think it's important to give you a quick explanation of the words: fork and knife.
The literal translation of the word fork is “Kāṇṭā aura Śūla” in Hindi. This translation is not suitable for talking about eating accessories. Also the literal translation for “knife” is “Cākū”. So, if you use “Kāṇṭā aura Cākū” for knife and fork, you will be understood, though the expression sounds a bit weird.
Normally, Indians eat with their right hand and only “upper class society” use a knife and fork for daily meals.
The following words will be useful for expressing your appreciation of food, and also for identifying the style in which it is cooked when reading a menu.
ग्रिल किया हुआ
grila kiyā huā
